With the presidential election coming up in the United States, stakes are high for those seeking refuge in the United States. The two candidates, Joe Biden and Donald Trump, have very different refugee policies.
Trump's policies can be summarized by the following:
- Continue building a wall in the US-Mexican border to stop illegal immigrants from Central America from entering the United States
- Put additional restrictions on legal immigration (on top of what has already been implemented since his election in 2016)
Biden's are, although not as open as the EU's, differs from Trump
- Stop building the US-Mexico Wall
- Provide ways for illegal immigrants currently in the US to become legal immigrants
- Use resources to help immigrants already in the US
This election seems to be a crucial point in the way people accept refugees. Will the United States, as the world's leading nation, show a precedent in how to integrate refugees, or will they show the world rejection of those in need and make the world more nationalistic?
